There are two main types of air compressor’s pumps: Oil lubed and oil-less. When shopping for a portable air compressor it is useful to understand the pros and cons of the air compressor pumps used by each product. Don’t wait to discover the difference after you have made your purchase only to find out you should have chosen differently.
When choosing a portable air compressor it pays to understand the differences between the kinds of air compressor pumps. Obviously, the oil-less air compressor pump works without lubrication for the moving parts, and are cheaper to purchase.
However, there is a downside to purchasing an oil-less air compressor pump device: it will be noisier than the oil lubed air compressor pump. The reason for this is that it is not lubricated on a regular basis, and when moving parts rub against each other they will create noise.
The oil-less system is more expensive, louder and last for less time than the oiled lube pumps. However, the air delivered is of a better quality.
On the other hand, the oil-lubed air compressor pumps run much quieter, but they will not deliver the same quality of air as the oil-less owing to the fact that oil can seep into the air supply produced by the air compressor pump.
This issue can be further complicated if the condensation water which naturally occurs in a storage tank is not drained regularly. When there is water remaining in the storage tank, and some oil gets into the storage tank, the air produced can force out a rather dark, muddy looking watery substance that can clog up air tools and put this substance into items you may be inflating.
Remember, the better the quality of air produced by your portable air compressor the better your air tools will operate, the longer they will last and the happier you will be. So, when you purchase your portable air compressor make sure you are clear on the differences between the two kinds of air compressor pumps.
As always, be careful when working with compressed air – it can be dangerous, and the tools powered by compressed air are more powerful than conventional tools.
